America's Heartland

Celebrating our Nation's Agriculture

America’s Heartland takes a detailed look at agriculture in America. The half hour magazine style program puts reporters and photographers on the road across the nation to meet the people who produce the food for our tables and the fiber that goes into our clothing. In addition, we meet the men and women also working to produce the biofuels helping America towards energy independence.

America’s Heartland is produced by KVIE Television in Sacramento, California. The show’s producers and reporters began the season with stories about the shortage of food production veterinarians-a critical piece in the nation’s food supply picture.

They also took a look at the ever increasing number of farmers markets in large and small cities across the country. The growth has been fueled by an increasing consumer demand for food that’s “Fresh from the Farm.” And they noted that consumers are more willing than ever travel to the farms themselves where they can harvest fruits and vegetables that go directly from the farm field to the dinner table.

Season four also brings some very special theme shows. One show focuses on the extremes of nature and what it means all along the food supply chain. They travelled through the Midwest where farmers faced challenges from nature in the form of rains that delayed planting and washed away crops. They visited the South where long standing drought has taken its toll on both farmers and ranchers. They report on how growers in California deal with the devastation of wildfires. And they look at how agricultural weather forecasting is a means whereby farmers try to stay ahead of the weather. In two other theme shows, America’s Heartland goes aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier where food from the Heartland plays a role in America’s security and where culinary personnel dish up thousands of meals each day for our service men and women. The show also travels to Taiwan and Mainland China to see how farm products from the heartland play a role in the economic well being of our nation and a role in providing critical foodstuffs for expanding populations.

In season 4, host Paul Ryan spends even more time with farmers and ranchers, learning about their daily activities. It’s another opportunity to give viewers a personal glimpse into their lives and hopes for the future.

This season, all 22 of America’s Heartland episodes are being recorded and broadcast in High Definition. Viewers who’ve come to love the program’s stunning videography will enjoy even more compelling images in this exciting new format. America’s Heartland is a production of KVIE, Sacramento and distributed by American Public Television
